Narrative: Balance of the earth and sky

The brief:

‘Balance of the Cosmos’ was a large scale poetic show commissioned to run at Taichung Lantern Festival in February 2020. With a year to plan and organise, we were to create an outdoor show of the highest calibre, bringing international artists and world class circus skills and structures together with local artists and community performers to create a show that spoke to local audiences.

The show we made over 4 weeks onsite told a simple story of the need to balance our desire to live interesting and exciting lives with our respect for the environment. It featured over 80 artists and was a true multi-cultural collaboration, celebrating artistry from the UK, France, USA and Taiwan. We shipped out 2 tonnes of equipment to Taiwan from the UK, composing new music and writing choir scores, designing new LED tech costumes, producing new lanterns and stage designs and conducting three site visits to Taiwan to meet local artists, choirs, dancers, community groups.

You can read more about it on our blog written by Artistic Director Billy Alwen.

It's really important to us to involve local artists and residents, because then the show belongs to the place and the people, rather than to us
