Client: Various

Audience: 10-2000

Narrative: The umbrella project is an accessible participation project. Our choreographers work with community participants to create a kaleidoscope of moving lights.

The brief:

This colourful piece creates an art installation that can instantly transform huge areas.  Can be used in a parade, or as a staged choreographed piece.  We often also use it as an element of a larger show. Crucially it is a participatory piece that supports placemaking objectives by involving people in a joyful and colourful event exploring the urban landscape.

Wherever we go with Umbrella Project, we work with local community groups to teach them the simple choreographies that we’ve devised.  We adapt to each client brief and location. We always bring a technician with us to troubleshoot – although for once we are never challenged by the rain with this show!

We have taken umbrellas to Spain, Shanghai, Azerbaijan, Taiwan, to festivals, to parties, to weddings, to Diwali events, parades, and to create larger images for photoshoots, launches and public campaigns.

Umbrella raves in churches, glitter bombs, singing, dancing, meeting new people, and of course the performance! I wish I could do it again!
